Making Reading Fun: Storytelling Dominoes in Our Homeschool

Reading hasn’t always been easy in our homeschool journey. Some days it clicks, and other days… well, let’s just say we need a little creativity to keep everyone engaged. That’s why I’m always on the lookout for ways to make reading feel less like a chore and more like play — and recently, we we sent something that’s been a total game changer: Storytelling Dominoes from Educational Insights. (This is the exact set of dominoes we have, linked on Amazon).

These colorful dominoes come with pictures instead of numbers, and the idea is simple — match the pieces to create a story. Each tile connects to another, helping kids build sequencing skills and stretch their imaginations. What I love most is that there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to play. The stories can be silly, serious, or totally wild — it’s all about letting creativity lead the way.

We’ve been using them in our reading lessons, and it’s amazing how much learning happens without anyone realizing it. My daughter starts connecting images into a storyline, then we talk through what’s happening, what comes next, and even write down her version afterward. Suddenly, we’re working on reading comprehension, sentence structure, and storytelling — all while laughing over talking animals or silly mix-ups in her plot.

It’s also been a fun way to involve my younger one. Even though he’s not reading yet, he loves helping pick which domino comes next. He’s practicing early sequencing and learning that stories have a beginning, middle, and end — which is a big step in pre-reading skills.

The best part? The dominoes fit right into our hands-on, interest-led approach to homeschooling. Some days we use them to spark journal prompts, other days they’re just part of our morning basket for creative play. It’s flexible, it’s engaging, and it’s one of those tools that reminds me learning doesn’t have to look traditional to be meaningful.

I’m so thankful Educational Insights shared these with us — not only because they’re fun, but because they’ve truly made reading time something we all look forward to again. If your kids could use a little spark of excitement in their learning, definitely check them out, I have linked their website above. Because reading should always be about adventure, imagination, and connection.
